Live band study: Brad Barr

February 3, 2010 by Aimée van Drimmelen

These images are from a show my friend Brad Barr played at Le Divan Orange. I was sitting in a very very dark corner and couldn’t see what I was drawing, which is great practice I imagine. Filled the rest in later thus avoiding spilling ink like I always do. Here’s the process:

Beautiful music

January 25, 2010 by Aimée van Drimmelen

My friend Joe Grass just sent me video links to a Lhasa De Sela concert he performed in a while back. As you may know Lhasa died this Jan. 1 2010 after a 21 month battle with breast cancer (she was 37). I highly recommend watching the footage from this beautiful private concert. Joe is using the pedal steele I painted for him.

Church of Rock I.

January 4, 2010 by Aimée van Drimmelen

A couple weeks ago I got the chance to play some music with some wonderful people in a beautiful old country church studio in western NY. I did some sketches, which I’ll post over the next few days.

I’m experimenting lately with how best to colour b&w ink drawings like these. Keeping things simple and within a limited colour palette feels best right now. These are a mix of hand colour and computer.  I think once I figure out what I like I’ll hand colour everything but until then I’ll avoid potential destruction by testing via photoshop/illustrator.

Let the winter sketching begin!

December 13, 2009 by Aimée van Drimmelen

I was walking to the studio in the snow today and I realized one of the reasons I love winter so much is the high contrast. Everything is black and white. I like the certainty.

I just noticed there’s a Hasidic boys school down the street with a tiny walled-in fenced-in yard. It’s recess: boys, black coats, shovels and snow. I did a quick sketch when I got inside, so I can remember. Below is another one from Jean-Talon Market a few weekends ago, sitting outside with cold hands and warm tea. Looking forward to more winter sketching in the coming months. (click images to enlarge)
